At base, I object to any system that makes me feel like a store clerk in “High Fidelity.” Those guys are not my guys. I mean, I don’t follow basketball statistics. I watch the Oscars for the starlet meltdowns and I don’t expect the “best movie” to be the best movie. I black out when I try to calculate the tip. Emily Nussbaum rants against the top ten list. I’m a lover of top-ten lists, it’s usually my favorite thing about the Internet - a month long retrospective into why the past year was awesome. A well cultivated top-ten list helps frame the zeitgeist of the year, and helps uncover great music, tv, and movies you might have missed. For the critic, I can imagine it to be a tiresome effort to weed through all the competing lists, but to the reader, it’s a year-end compilation that helps make sure you didn’t miss something beautiful or fantastic.
